Scientific-adventure cruise 2017

This scientific-adventure cruise has no analogues – researchers and individual explorers will join their forces together to set off for scantily investigated areas of Kamchatka to observe killer whales.

Reasons to go:

• To see far away and mysterious peninsula;

• To make a voyage on an expeditionary sailing catamaran along Kamchatka coastline or to the Kuril Islands;

• To participate in scientific research of the killer whales together with biologists;

• To find yourself in the crater of an active volcano;

• To try sea kayaking (to fall in love with it) with sea lions, seals and may be even with killer whales;

• To bathe in the natural hot springs known for their healing and rejuvenating effects;

• To visit one of the 7 natural wonders of boundless Russia – the Valley of geysers.

Objectives of the scientific-adventure cruise

There is still much to learn in order to understand the Russian Far East killer whale populations. FEROP team hopes that the study will help to prevent further capture and will lead to a greater understanding of the population structure and to the threats to the habitat, including hydrocarbon (seismic) exploration (potential oil spills and noise) and overfishing of their prey species. Killer whales have always been considered one of the most beautiful and intelligent marine animals. They are usually known as cruel predators that kill seals and whales. But, at the same time, when people see these peculiar creatures in an oceanarium or — much better — in the wild, they immediately fall their prey. Orca’s complex behavior, sophisticated social structure and special vocalizations with a system of dialects unique to each group make them one of the most outstanding subjects for research. Killer whales live in most seas from the Arctic to Antarctic, but in Russia they are studied in only one place — Kamchatka.

Killer whales might look alike, but they all different and unique. To study these animals, scientists should know them “in the face”. Photo identification is a method of scientific research that turns into an exciting and challenging adventure.

Guests are accommodated on the sailing catamaran. There are three well-appointed double-berth cabins and two three-berth cabins with closets and shelves (general capacity – 12 people). Each hull is supplied with facilities (toilet and showers). The third shower-room is located at the stern of the watercraft.

A spacious mess-deck and a galley are located in the catamaran’s bridge, the first provides an amazing view. There are comfortable seats on the deck where passengers can spend their time reading or admiring the breath-taking scenery.

In the evenings after an eventful day guests have the chance to relax in the warm and cozy floating house, a hot shower and a tasty dinner are awaiting.

Catamaran is equipped with engines, so even during a calm it can follow the itinerary without delay. The vessel goes under sail in case of favorable wind conditions. All passengers will be instructed in advance to handle sailing equipment. Anyone can try themselves in steering or working with sails. One more enjoyable activity during the voyage is sea kayaking.

Additional facilities: sound and video systems, an extra electric generator, two motor boats (two’s boats), full set of sea kayaking equipment (kayaks, paddles, spray skirts, life jackets and helmets), six oxygen cylinders for diving with weights, a compressor and SUP-sets (stand-up paddle boarding).

Travelling in Kamchatka on a sailing catamaran and kayaks will give you a strong sense of achievement and turn you into a real explorer and pathfinder.

What we will do?

Primary goal of the cruise is search and observation of harbor porpoise, whales, dolphins and, of course, killer whales. Once we see an animal, we will approach it (trying not to disturb) by a motor boat, take pictures, describe its behavior, take samples from the feeding areas, listen to and record their voices. At the end of the day we will discuss the results of the work, compare photos with the ones from the catalogue. However, we should fully understand that in the wild nature, nobody can make animals do what they want.

In addition, we will enter some picturesque bays and pass numerous islets, islands and capes.

Itinerary
